Graham sat down recently to answer a few questions about why she started Jamie Graham & Associates and how it serves the needs of parents, children and the entire San Antonio-area community.
When did you know you wanted to be a lawyer?
After my parents’ divorce, I saw what my mother went through and how little her own lawyer helped her. She was traumatized and financially desperate. As a child, I felt helpless because I could not help her. After I finished high school, I went to work for a family law attorney before starting college. It was then that I realized that family law was the area that I wanted to practice in as an attorney.
What sort of education did you go through?
I got my BA in Political Science from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas. I received my Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas. I participated in mock trial and moot court to help me learn how to advocate in the courtroom, as well as in the Court of Appeals.
Why did you decide to go into family law?
The divorce of my parents and what I saw and went through as a child influenced me greatly in my choices in life. Also, I like people and want to help fix what is broken. I genuinely want to help parents and their children as they transition to a new life.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
I love visiting with my clients and helping them overcome many of the obstacles they face when they go through the divorce process. They usually come in scared and alone. It is helpful for them to talk about what their life will look like after the divorce. Watching their growth as they become empowered and realize they’re stronger than they originally thought is truly a blessing.
What challenges do you face in this area of law?
With regard to kids, it is a multifaceted area of the law that is very emotionally charged. It’s always a challenge when kids are put in the middle of divorcing parents. What parents want isn’t always what children need. We put kids first and expect our clients to do the same. Working with mental health professionals is also a challenge for many reasons.
How do you manage to bring a fresh and innovative approach to handling all these challenges?
We are constantly reviewing materials on the everchanging area of children and their needs as they face divorcing parents.
What’s it like working closely with your husband?
His affinity for numbers is a benefit to the firm. It allows me to focus on what I am best at. However, it’s a bit of a challenge to separate work and 36棋牌 life.
How important are professional relationships in building a firm like Jamie Graham & Associates?
Very important. It helps to know the people you work with—judges, experts, colleagues, and others. Networking is essential; should a unique situation arise, we know who to call.
In family law, you work with other families on some of the most important decisions they’ll ever make. What’s rewarding about that?
Helping clients understand that there is a future after divorce. I joke sometimes that we should do a “before and after” picture of our clients when they have their first appointment and then their last. It’s astounding the differences in the way they look and act when they have finalized their legal matter.
What do you do to stay active in the community—both the legal community and San Antonio in general? Why is that important?
We participate in events involving the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Ronald McDonald House, Morgan’s Wonderland, and others. We care about our community and believe it’s important to give back.
